Marirose and Christy were looking to revolutionize muffins by creating a delicious and healthy alternative that everyone would love. They started sharing their superfood muffins with their friends at the climbing gym and soon had their very first client. Today, Muffin Revolution is able to share their muffins across the country with customers who are equally excited about their delicious creation!
Marirose Piciucco and Christy Kovacs have always been obsessed with creating the most nutrient-dense food they possibly could. What started as solely experimenting in Marirose’s kitchen in 2012, has now become something bigger than either of them could have ever imagined.
After finishing a holistic cooking program based in Berkeley, California, Marirose and Christy set off to their favorite rock climbing gym. Excited about everything they had just learned throughout the program, they continued bouncing food ideas and recipes off of each other. Together they thought of “meal in a muffin,” a portable vehicle to deliver whole foods ingredients that wasn’t a bar. Something drew them to the idea of a healthy muffin: “Why did all store-bought muffins have such processed and refined ingredients? We knew we could do better.” They soon began to craft recipes, bake dozens of muffins, and share them with their fellow climbers.
As muffins soon became a popular post-climbing snack, Marirose and Christy established their first client, Berkeley Ironworks, who asked if they could sell their muffins at the front desk. The climbing gym was Marirose and Christy’s first account and officially a Revolution had been born!
Muffin Revolution is Marirose and Christy’s very own superfood muffin company that is based out of Richmond, California. Their muffins are filled with blanched almond meal in the place of flour, nuts and seeds for protein, flax or chia seeds for an omega-3 boost, and dates to add a nice sweetness to every bite. Just down the street from their facility is a Rosie the Riveter Museum, constantly reminding the Muffin Revolution team that women can, in fact, get it done. This women-owned business not only sells their muffins in wholesale stores, but ships them right to customers’ doors around the country.
Marirose and Christy noted that they have seen a spike in interest around plant-based alternatives to meat, dairy, baked goods, ice-cream, etc. Their favorite plant-based snack, of course, besides their superfood muffins, is a ripe juicy peach right off the tree when it’s still warm from the sun: “The flavor of a perfect peach can bring tears to my eyes, how can so much complexity be created from just sunshine, water, soil, and a tiny seed? Nature is so miraculous.”
The Muffin Revolution team goes beyond Marirose and Christy, as they emphasize “our employees are our number one priority, we could not do what we do without them.” Their team takes time to think about the bigger picture with the business and where it’s going as well as spending more time re-evaluating their individual happiness and work-life balance. When buying a delicious muffin from Muffin Revolution, you are not only supporting a small, local business, but investing in good people doing good things for their community.
