Chickapea Pasta isn’t just another noodle—it's a powerhouse blend of taste, nutrition, and values. Chickapea’s protein-packed, chickpea-based pasta is redefining pasta as we know it—clean ingredients, craveable taste, and a mission that matches Thistle’s. Get to know the story behind Chickapea and why it’s the perfect addition to our dishes.
How did Chickapea Pasta get cooking? What’s the story behind the brand?
CEO and Founder Shelby Taylor created Chickapea to make it easier and more delicious for people to eat healthy. As a former health shop owner, she saw how much everyone loved pasta as a convenient and comforting meal that everyone could get excited about but it fell short on nutritional benefits. Shelby made it her mission to turn pasta into a superfood by using clean, nourishing ingredients that could deliver on classic pasta taste and texture. We shouldn't have to choose between the foods we love and the foods that love us back. With Chickapea, they're one and the same.
Chickapea was founded in Collingwood, ON, Canada in 2015 where we are still based. We source our ingredients and manufacture our pasta in the United States.
How does Chickapea make a gluten-free pasta that tastes this good? And what’s your pitch to anyone who doubts a gluten-free noodle can bring the flavor?
Give it a try! We’ve worked hard to perfect a pasta recipe that provides protein, fiber and nutrients with that traditional pasta taste and texture you know and love. In 2024, we re-launched our pasta with an updated recipe made with only two ingredients—chickpeas and yellow peas. Replacing the lentils in our original recipe with yellow peas made a craveable, gluten-free pasta that’s just as nutritious and even easier to cook and digest than the old recipe. The feedback from longtime Chickapea fans and new customers alike has been overwhelmingly positive. We kept the comfort of classic pasta, cut the gluten and upped the nutrition!
What's in Chickapea’s pasta? And what makes these ingredients stand out in the carb crowd?
We like our carbs complex, not our ingredients. Our pasta is made from only wholesome, real ingredients. No secrets here—just chickpeas and yellow peas.
The small but mighty chickpea is packed full of protein, carbs, fiber, antioxidants, and numerous vitamins and minerals. Plus they taste great. The powerhouse yellow pea is not only super nutritious and packed with protein, but it releases little starch, which makes our pasta even easier to cook and taste more like traditional pasta.
Let’s talk protein power. How does Chickapea stack up when it comes to fueling up?
Few things make pasta better. Protein is one of them. You get 24g of protein in a 100g serving of Chickapea—that’s about the same amount of protein as a serving of chicken or fish! When you choose Chickapea, you’re choosing 86% more protein, 66% more fiber and 25% fewer net cabs vs the average white pasta (per 56g serving).
Chickapea’s committed to quality and sustainability – and we love that about you! How do you keep that commitment in sourcing and production?
We choose suppliers who share our values and beliefs and put them into practice.
Our partners work with and source from suppliers and farms that are good to the earth and to their communities. Ingredients are sourced close to manufacturing to reduce our carbon footprint. Chickapea products are packaged in recyclable boxes and 36% of our packaging is made from post-recycled materials.
