Birgitta’s freshly baked, Swedish crackers were always a huge hit at her daughter’s school events. After partnering with her friend Diana, these two women were determined to create a company that would be a “a force of good” in our world today. In 2017, Birgitta and Diana founded Cult Crackers and have been sharing their delicious, plant forward snacks with a variety of communities ever since.
Before starting their cracker business, Birgitta Durell worked for her family’s Swedish bakeware company and Dianna Dar had an ecommerce, marketing, and food background. These two female founders' relationship began at The Berkeley School in California where both their daughters attended school at the time. Birgitta was known for bringing her homemade Swedish crackers to various school related events. After trying a single bite of her crackers, students, teachers, and parents would rave about how delicious they were. Once Birgitta realized how much people enjoyed her freshly baked snacks, she soon asked Dianna to help her design a business so she could sell her crackers on a larger scale. Together, these two outstanding women dreamt up what they thought would be an ambitious idea: to make and sell Birgitta’s crackers with a healthy California twist. Soon, this idea became a reality, and in 2017 Cult Crackers was born.
When creating Cult Crackers, Birgitta and Diana wanted customers to enjoy their crackers knowing that they’re made with both the consumer and planet’s well-being in mind. Birgitta and Diana were determined to build a business that was used as “a force for good.” Today, Cult Crackers is committed to using only the highest quality organic ingredients they can find. Their team hand mixes and bakes their crackers daily, packages their products in sustainable materials, and does everything they can with care and intention. Moreover, the Cult Cracker team works not only for themselves, but for each other, and their community. Their small, but mighty team is always adapting, like many other local businesses, while learning to do more with less. Recently, the company has transitioned to packaging their crackers in recyclable pouches. Cult Crackers is one of the first food companies to use this recyclable material, and customers are excited about their new packaging and new look.
People love these crackers because they love the taste and texture, and because they’re filled with lots of ingredients that are nourishing in many ways. Cult Crackers are packed with protein and fiber and are made to be enjoyed by everyone as they are plant forward, vegan, gluten-free, grain-free, dairy-free, organic, and nutrient dense. Birgitta’s favorite cracker is their best-selling Crunchy Cassava Crackers because of their crunchy goodness. Dianna favors the Classic Seed Crackers for their sweet, rich flavors. They’re currently working on a new recipe, a Buckwheat Red Lentil Cracker, and the two founders are looking forward to having a new favorite added to their selection!
Not only are customers able to buy Cult Crackers online or from their local grocery store shelves, but a select few are able to receive a hand delivery from Birgitta and Diana themselves: “We get to hand deliver our local orders in Berkeley, and so our customers get to meet us and we get to meet them. We often hear how much people appreciate what we’re doing and how they love our crackers. It’s those little things that have a big impact on small business owners.” Local food businesses, such as Thistle, are where Birgitta and Diana enjoy buying food for their families. This way they can say, they’re not just Thistle suppliers, but Thistle customers as well! At Thistle, we look forward to working with Cult Crackers for years to come as we grow and evolve our businesses together, one cracker at a time!
